OneThe room

Candles on every table

Blue velvet to the floor, white chairs, a pair of tapers and a cake on every table before the first guest walks in.

Two lit tapers in brass candlesticks on a round table dressed in deep blue, the room behind them out of focus

TwoThe soup

Named, flowered, kept hot

Chicken and vegetable, each under its own card, with the noodles, the kneidlach and the croutons laid out beside them.

The soup station: two white pots on crates either side of a tall floral arrangement, garnishes in glass dishes in front
Two soups, each with its own card and its own flowers

ThreeThe line

Twelve trays, every one labelled

Hot pastrami, beef yapchik, sesame chicken, sauteed liver, potato kugel — the length of the wall, under the flowers, and nobody has to ask what anything is.

SixThe bar

Poured all evening

A full bar set against the seforim, everything on ice, and somebody behind it from the first l'chaim to the last.

The bar laid along a shelf in front of bookcases, bottles and mixers on ice
